Pre-wedding at Barongarook

Tomorrow I get to photograph James and Anette's wedding at their home in Barongarook, near Colac, so I thought I'd better get hopping and actually post their pre-wedding images! I always have so much trouble selecting my favourites! Their young son George was just so very cute, I always love when couples have a child who gets to share in this amazing day with their parents as well, it makes it so very special for all involved.

The weather here is so all over the place at the moment, fingers crossed we don't get rain! Overcast would be great, but not rain for an outdoor wedding. Here's hoping! I know it's going to be a wonderful wedding though; they have Nettie Hulme as their celebrant, and Anette's family are coming over from Finland for the occasion too. They were such a fun couple at the pre-wedding session - so relaxed and fun to be around, so I'm very much looking forward to creating some great memories for them!

Gorgeous gay wedding at Ceres Environmental Park!

Oh, I'm so behind with this, but it was just so daunting trying to cut the images from Jami and Claire's wedding to just a handful for this blog! They're such an amazing couple, so obviously in love and that showed through the whole day. Along with their young son, family and friends, they held their wedding (still technically a commitment ceremony thanks to our political system which is yet to recognise gay marriage...grr!) at Ceres Environmental Park in Brunswick on a perfect April day. The park is the most wonderful location for a wedding, with wandering paths leading to so many different areas full of potential for photography!

An interview with Melbourne's Bang Bang Beauty Bar's super-talented duo; Gemma and Kez

Kez and Gemma are the wonderfully talented ladies behind Melbourne's Bang Bang Beauty Bar - a mobile hair and makeup team specialising in vintage style makeovers; perfect for weddings and special occasions! We teamed up for some special image-making down the coast at Portarlington and, with the help of three gorgeous women, created so many amazing images! I'll let their words and my images speak for their talent :)

1.     Tell me a bit about Bang Bang Beauty Bar.

Bang Bang Beauty Bar is a duo of hair and makeup artists that specialize in vintage make-overs.

2.     Tell me a bit about yourselves.

Gem – I live in Rye, and over the years I have been in punk bands and been a burlesque performer/teacher.  Being a burlesque performer I had to learn stage makeup and hair techniques, and eventually people came to me as clients for their own beauty needs. I also ran a burlesque and vintage entertainment agency in the UK where I did vintage hair and makeup for 4 years with a team of stylists.  I specialize in vintage hair styles including but not limited to victory rolls, pin curls, betty bangs and the classic Hollywood wave.

Kez – Well I’m from Rosebud, not far from Gem. I have two little girls (Billie 2 and Lola 4) and also love the vintage scene. I have a 1964 EH holden and a 1948 Hudson Sled and also dabble in a bit of pinup modelling. I am a makeup rep for a company called Cailyn Cosmetics and also the makeup artist in Bang Bang Beauty Bar. I really feel that makeup is my calling, and am my happiest when I have my brush belt on doing my thing.

3.     How would you describe what you offer? What makes you unique in this field?

We offer women the opportunity to be completely transformed. Whether for a wedding, special occasion, Hens party/girls day/night or photos shoot.

We are unique in the way that if the client likes the makeup product we use they have the opportunity to buy it for themselves. We are also very competitive with our pricing and will travel all over Victoria and Interstate.

4.     How did you get started in your careers?

Gem – I was doing a lot of vintage makeovers for clients I met through burlesque. At first I was nervous about having proper clients because I had never planned on becoming a makeup artist but due to demand I went ahead and became qualified and never looked back.

Kez – I was actually working in retail when I was discovered by Cailyn Cosmetics. I was fell in love with their products and started selling it. I then was lucky enough to meet Gem at a Rockabilly event in Rye and we got talking about makeup and our love for the vintage scene. We were then booked separately for a vintage photo shoot, I was doing the makeup and Gem was doing the hair. We had 5 models in one day for a Film Noir theme and it was then that we realised how much of a great team we made. We had to do something together, it was written in our cards!

5.     What do you love most about what you do?

Gem – I love the creative aspect. Transforming hair from straight and unkempt to something sculptured and impressive.

Kez – I really love seeing our clients’ persona change after being transformed. I love the confidence boost and seeing how happy they are. It really gives me the warm and fuzzies.

6.     What advice would you give potential clients when looking for hair and makeup?

Gem – Hair up is really good option because it stays off our face (out of your makeup). Curls drop out but an up-do will look great well into the night.  If you have a head piece or vale, always tell your hair stylist before you discuss styles so they can incorporate that, as some hair styles work better that others with various hair head pieces.

Kez – I would say to ignore all the bridal magazines that tell you ‘How a Bride should look’ and to look how ever the hell you want to. If you want a heavy makeup because that’s what you feel comfortable then do it or vice versa. It is your special day, do what you want.

7.     If you weren’t doing what you do now what would you be?

Gem – I would probably still be a Burlesque agent and teaching a lot more than I do now. (I also sell cat scratchers for my sisters company).

Kez – I would be looking for Gem!!  Seriously though I would be working in nutrition and health, I am currently studying Nutritional Medicine which is basically learning how to use food as medicine.

8.     What’s your favourite memory from Bang Bang Beauty Bar (or any hair or makeup job) so far?

Gem – We had a client who was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. Her best friend surprised her with a visit from Kez and I. We walked into her lounge room with our kits and she had no idea who we were or what we were doing in her house and when we introduced ourselves and why we were there she burst into tears of joy and said she had wanted this whole life.

Kez – My favourite memory is the Victorian Hot Rod Show this year (2015). Gem and I were invited to work a stand there by good friends (Kingpin Kuztums). It was the first week Gem and I had come up with Bang Bang Beauty Bar. We got our logo, business cards and kits together so fast for this event and worked 12 hour days for 4 days straight. It was full on but we loved every single second. This really instilled in my mind that we are on the right track in life.

9.     What’s the most unusual request you’ve had?
To cover a naked body in gold glitter paint so she can pose next to a mustang for a photo shoot. The clients all time dream shoot.

Jami and Claire's pre-wedding session at Ceres Environment Park, Melbourne.

Jami and Claire's pre-wedding session was at Ceres Environment park in Brunswick, which is where they're going to be having their wedding ceremony as well. While same-sex marriages are not yet legal here in Australia, it's great to see couples doing their own ceremonies their way. With no standing precedents, tradition can be thrown out the window and it's all about the couple and their commitment of love for one another rather than just the rituals. I can't wait for their ceremony, it's going to be so much fun! Their little boy is so adorable too. Kids and weddings are so much fun, because they're just so unpredictable!

I love doing pre-wedding sessions with my wedding clients. It helps us to get to know one another, it helps you to feel relaxed in front of my camera and it helps me to see those special things that will help me make your wedding photos really special and individual.

An Interview with Nettie Hulme - Marriage Celebrant

Throughout my years of being a wedding photographer, Nettie was one of the most frequent celebrants I'd see performing weddings, from Geelong to the Bellarine Peninsula and the Otway regions, she'd pop up everywhere (lots of smart couples!)! We became friends on facebook and when I decided to get back into the business she was one of the first people I turned to as I value and respect her work so much. Her ceremonies are absolutely beautiful; every one tailored individually, and you really get to see that she adores and cherishes every couple she comes into contact with.

I'm also very happy to announce that Nettie and I and along with Forrest guesthouse are offering elopement packages for special couples, so get in fast and have an awesome, run-away wedding with everything looked after for you!

Nettie Hulme - Marriage Celebrant

Nettie Hulme - Marriage Celebrant

1.     Tell me a bit about yourself.

Well it’s a bit challenging speaking about myself…I’m usually talking on behalf of other people! I live with my partner, Fran, on twenty acres near Forrest and just love being in the bush. We have a lot of wildlife visiting us daily: wallabies, kangaroos, echidnas, snakes and lots and lots of different bird species. I especially love the yellow tailed black cockatoos.

2.     How would you describe what you offer? What’s special about you that makes you unique in this field?

I thinking one of the unique things I offer couples is the ability to work collaboratively and creatively to design a ceremony that expresses them. I have the confidence after a decade of weddings to be able to say anything goes and I’ll make sure it’s ‘legal’. Some couples know exactly what they want. Others don’t know where to start. I can tailor my approach to suit everyone.

3.     How did you get started in being a celebrant?

Strangely enough it was through organising and speaking at my father’s funeral twenty years ago. So many people afterwards said what a beautiful, heartfelt ceremony and that I should consider doing it for a living. I started my training at Monash University and they suggested I try for registration as a marriage celebrant and my business just grew from there.

4.     What do you love most about being a celebrant?

People. So many different and wonderful people have crossed my path during my time as a celebrant. I know it is a cliché but it truly is a privilege to be part of people’s lives at those milestone moments, even though our connection may be brief, it often feels very profound. I get a lot of satisfaction from happy clients.

5.     What advice would you give potential couples when looking for a celebrant?

Interview a few to make sure you find the person who is right for you. If you haven’t seen the celebrant in action yourself, or had them referred by someone you trust, you can ask for references. Never think ‘oh it doesn’t matter, anyone will do’ because when the day is over it is so important that you can look back to the moment you exchanged  those important vows and remember a beautiful, personalised ceremony.

6.     If you weren’t a celebrant what would you be?

Well I am lots of things already! My ‘day’ job is as a trainer in community services work and I develop and deliver professional development for celebrants Australia wide on behalf of Gordon TAFE.  I am also editor of Otway Life Magazine , which is a fantastic experience. And I like to paint, draw and sculpt. Time in my studio space is very re-energising. I love camping and fishing and planning our next travel adventure to Canada…
